New Timber Front Door - the conception

We need a New Front Door. We know what we want, Victorian style, four panel, top two panels glazed with leaded glass. Do we want a UPVC door?. Definitely NO! Can we buy what we want of the shelf? No! Can we afford to have a bespoke front door specially made? at £500 to £600 NO!

So another job for me to get cracking on with.

Firstly to get get the job signed off by my own personal conservation officer (the other half). I spent some time trying to work out how to use Google SketchUp. After a few hours I managed a reasonable visual representation of the front door we want.

It was enough to get the approval but I've not got the skills to tweak the proportions or work up the details. So literally “back to the drawing board”.

By the time I had drawn this the misses had been on ebay and bought antique front door furniture so they have been incorporated. I think the knocker needs to be a little higher. It's certainly going to look right on our house, our perfect, replacement timber front door. It'll look so much better than the rest of the street that have had UPVC front doors

In the next section I cover the design some of the design considerations and proportions using the golden ratio.

Comments please any questions? over on the blog.
