Self-Propelled Cherry Pickers

These are the Cherry Pickers favoured by many by construction, fit-out and maintenance contractors because of their speed and ease of use.  The variety of machines available for general or specialist applications is constantly growing.

Cherry picker used for factory maintananceThe most versatile and hence common Cherry Pickers are those with a self-propelled base with two wheel drive powered by petrol, diesel or battery electric. Some are Bi-Powered with the option to switch from engine to battery power to eliminate the problems of exhaust fumes when working in unventilated areas.  The stability of these machines is derived from the wheel base, lack of suspension and weight concentrated as low as possible.  To gain maximum outreach the weight of the engine, batteries and extra counter balance weights slews behind the major pivot point.  This balancing means that outriggers are not required so the machine can remain mobile and high productivity is maintained.  However being mobile increases the potential for serious /fatal accidents, please read about Cherry Picker Safety.

Cherry picker being used on a Construction siteThe type of Cherry Pickers mentioned above are limited by the ground conditions , they need to be used on stable and flat ground. In many fit-out, maintenance and refurbishment operations this does not present a problem as the floor slabs and road ways are already in place.  Some are specified for use outddoors as welland may have 4 wheel drive, if this type of Cherry Picker are to be used in the construction of buildings etc. the condition of the ground is critical. It should be specified as part of the groundworks phase that back filling is fully completed, sufficiently compacted and the surface is stable.
